Why do I have to register my vehicle? |
Parking is limited at Rutgers-New Brunswick. To insure there are enough parking spaces for Rutgers employees and students we require that all vehicles be registered. |
Why do I have to pay for a permit to park at Rutgers? |
Permit fees offset Department of Transportation Services operation and maintenance expenses. |
Can I move my sticker from one vehicle to another without paying again?
Why do I get only one hangtag when I registered two or more vehicles? |
Although you may have many vehicles you could use on campus, you are allowed to use only one at a time. Therefore, the one hangtag is to be moved to the one vehicle in use. It is required that each vehicle be registered to receive a sticker. Both a hangtag and a sticker must be on a vehicle when parked on campus. Additional Vehicles cost $10.00. |
Why are there not enough parking spaces at Rutgers? |
There are over 21,000 spaces at the University. On average, there are over 2,000 empty spaces every day on campus. Transit Services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus, providing access to and from these vacant spaces. |
Where can I park? |
Based on the parking permit you have, as well as the assignment (if any) on your hangtag, there are standard parking areas where you may park at designated times. Click Here for a detailed list of available lots for each assignment. |
I paid my tickets online, when will the hold be removed? |
Holds are automatically removed within 48 business hours of the payment. If you need immediate hold removal, go to the Department of Transportation Services Office. Once the ticket fine is paid, a “Hold Removal” slip may be issued to you. |
| Why did I receive a ‘No Permit’ ticket when I had an official business card on my vehicle? |
A business card is not a replacement or substitute for a Rutgers-New Brunswick/Piscataway parking permit. Your vehicle must be registered at Department of Transportation Services to be allowed to park in the Rutgers-New Brunswick/Piscataway parking areas. |
Why do you ticket visitors? |
Any vehicle parked on campus must display a valid Rutgers-New Brunswick parking permit. Visitors can park in metered spaces or can purchase a Visitor Permit. |
Do I need to purchase a permit if I only plan to park on campus after 4:00 PM? |
Yes. Any vehicle parked on university property must display a valid Rutgers-New Brunswick parking permit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Night Permits are available. |
What should I do if my vehicle has been towed? |
Call Rutgers Police Department at 732/932-7211. |
What do I do if I can’t pay my full ticket balance? |

Why did I get a ticket when I parked in a lot with plenty of open parking spaces? |
Parking rules and regulations are in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. See Parking Lots for the lots and times available to you. |
Why did I get a ticket when the lot was full and there was no other place to park, so I parked outside the marked spaces? |
Parking in unmarked areas could obstruct critical thoroughfares. There should always be a spot available in at least one parking lot indicated by your parking permit zone. |
Why did I get a ticket when I left a note in the window explaining my situation? |
A note is not a valid replacement for a Rutgers-New Brunswick parking permit. |
Why did I get a ticket when the gate arm was up? |
Parking rules and regulations are in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. See Parking Lots for the lots and times available to you. |
Why did I get a ticket when my hangtag was up, but it just had something over it? |
The complete hangtag must be visible at all times. The Parking Enforcement Officer must be able to see the year, assignment, and permit number on the hangtag. |
